18-Year-Old Journi Prewitt Creates Subscription Box to Celebrate Black Culture

Journi Prewitt created the Black Butterfly Beautiful box at 16 years old when she realized the number of Black youth around her who were uninterested in reading. The monthly subscription box includes books featuring characters of color in addition to varying products from Black-owned businesses.

Black Butterfly Beautiful celebrated its one year anniversary in June, which fell on Prewitt’s 18th birthday. According to an article by Forbes Magazine, subscribers grew from 12 to almost 300 since the release of the first box in June 2017 to February 2018.

“I also think it helps young girls to see me as a teenage entrepreneur and African-American woman that isn’t doing something typical,” she said.

“I think it’s important for young girls to see other women of color give back to their community and build other people up.”
