Hey, June.

To start off June on a productive note, I spent the afternoon at Starbucks (aka my pretend office) planning out my goals for the month, some future blog posts and podcasts, and getting some other work done (stay tuned for the relaunching of HerCampus at Howard, I'm really really excited for that). I realized that I've definitely been slacking when it comes to writing, and if you heard my first podcast (I'm also really excited about that), I talked about an article I read called "What It Takes to Be a Finisher" and a Medium post by Louis Chew that discusses the difference between being good at many things versus being excellent at one thing. I want to start putting that into action in my day to day life, so here's how I plan to make the most out of this month:
1. Posting more consistently.
The number one thing I struggle with when it comes to my blog is posting consistently. I'm a huge fan of taking breaks to recharge and carefully and intentionally plan out new ideas, but the most influential factor in my success as a blogger and journalist is and will be my consistency. I have always been afraid to commit to a posting schedule because I was afraid I would eventually run out of content or slip up, but to honor my decision to "take myself seriously when it comes to this" is to commit to writing something every day and pushing myself to produce better content on a more regular basis. With that being said, look for new blog posts every Wednesday. I'll try to get my podcast on a consistent posting schedule once I get in the hang of recording and editing.
2. Getting back to what I know.
Looking back on everything that I've written about the past year or so, the one thing that I feel especially passionate about is authentically writing about my life's story. Many of my earlier blog posts came as a result of me experiencing life and just sharing what lessons I learned. That, along with posts about Black culture (particularly Beyoncé) is what I get most excited to write about, especially when I can turn it into something that someone, or even myself, might be able to learn from or connect to.
3. Being a finisher.
To reference the article again, and reiterate what I said in my podcast (if you haven't heard the first episode "nineteen.", click "The Podcast" in the menu), I want to accomplish everything I set out to do. Seeing as how we're starting a new month, today is as good a time as any to put it into action. I want to practice seeing things through and honoring goals that I set for myself, regardless of if I experience a loss in momentum. There are some things that I have to revisit and get excited about again because a few weeks ago, that goal was the only thing I had my mind on. The difference between those that are good and those that are great is who can get see things through. Period. And I want to begin implementing that in my own life.
June is already feeling like it's going to be an amazing month (and it's my birthday month which makes it even better), and I'm excited to see what I can accomplish in these 30 days. Again, stay tuned on Wednesdays from here on out for new posts, and let me know what topics you'd like me to discuss on my podcast!
