Success Profile: Denise Young Smith, Apple’s VP of Inclusion and Diversity

Denise Young Smith, former head of Worldwide Human Resources at Apple, is now the company’s first-ever Vice President of Inclusion and Diversity.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, the position was created as a result of the company’s efforts to increase diversity in addition to Young Smith’s personal interest in similar initiatives.

Young Smith was charged with developing an Inclusion and Diversity team to ensure that Apple’s workforce is representative of the consumers they serve.

On the Inclusion and Diversity page of Apple’s website, a quote from Young Smith reads,

“Diversity is more than any one gender, race, or ethnicity. It’s richly representative of all people, all backgrounds, and all perspectives. It is the entire human experience.”

In addition to increasing the number of women and minorities among Apple’s new hires, the Inclusion and Diversity team’s initiatives include diminishing the pay gap among Apple employees as well as advocating for LGBTQ, Veteran and disabled employees.
