Many college students find extra ways to make money by picking up a job at a local restaurant, babysitting, or doing hair in the dorm. A lot of people use time outside of the classroom to pursue their passions as well. Some students start clothing lines, nonprofit organizations, music careers, and everything else under the sun. Here are three steps to turn your passion into a profitable side hustle:
1. Figure out what your passion is
To pursue your passion, you must figure out what that is first. Take the time to see what you love doing or what problem you’d like to solve in your community. Then, see if you can turn that into something profitable. It may not immediately result in a paycheck but it can definitely lead to opportunities down the road or the fulfillment of doing what you love and helping someone else.
2. Make time to pursue your passion.
It is totally possible to be a full-time college student and still pursue your passion. You don't have to subscribe to the idea that if you want to do one, you have to give up the other. Time management will (and should) be your best friend. If you’re efficient when it’s time to study, you can create plenty of free time to work on projects that fulfill you. However, don’t lose sight of what should be your main priority—school—and make time to rest and recharge so you can grind consistently.
3. Give 100 percent effort to your passion.
There are plenty of people who start projects and think it’s their passion when they only do it because it’s popular or because it will be an easy resume ller. Make sure you start your side hustle for the right reasons because when the excitement dies down or the benefits roll in less frequently, you want to still be committed.
If you plan ahead and put in the work, you can create more opportunities for yourself that will be more beneficial in the long run. You also have something to fulfill you if and when your academic life gets boring. Who knows, your passion may eventually turn into your career!
