Every college athlete knows how focused you have to be to manage your sport and academics. However, not many people discuss student-athletes that, despite their already packed schedules, still make time to pursue a career. We got the chance to speak to Howard University student Nicole Hutchison, who is doing just that. When the junior Broadcast Journalism major is not putting in work on the tennis courts, she is making major moves in the sports journalism world. Nicole was recently accepted as a Campus Connection Reporter for ESPN and also has her own sports podcast. Check out the interview below:

1. When did your tennis journey begin and who or what inspired you to play?

Well, I didn't choose to play tennis. I grew up playing soccer, wanted to go to college for soccer, but my dad always saw me to be a tennis player. I wasn't sure why, but he did. So he took me out of soccer and put me in tennis at age 12. I hated it because I'm out there competing on my own, but I grew to love it.

2. What was the process of getting recruited by Howard University and what is your experience like playing there?

The process was pretty simple. I sent over my videos to coach Strickland like any other school, and he called saying he had a full ride to offer me. It was the best feeling ever knowing that I was going to THE Howard University to play tennis. Not many people can say they have a full athletic scholarship to Howard... it's on a different pedestal.

3. What are the pros and cons of being a student-athlete?

The pros and cons... umm... I'd say that being a student-athlete teaches you discipline and time management. That's a pro. When I have applied for internships, they look at how I've managed to intern, maintain my academics and compete as an athlete. So that's a pro. One of the cons... I would say having to get up early in the mornings for weights and then having to go back out there and practice in the evening. It's like you have so much more to do than the normal student.

4. Do you have a pre-match ritual? If so, what is it?

Pre-match ritual? Praying. I have to pray before every match. That's a must.

5. Are there any songs that motivate you before getting on the court?

The song that motivates me is "Champion" by Chris Brown. I love that song. I have listened to it every match since I started playing tennis.

6. You recently earned a position with ESPN’s Campus Connection Program, what or who inspired you to become a sports journalist?

Who inspired me? I'd say, my mom ... I grew up playing sports; my dad played pro ball…my whole family just loves sports so I just grew up around it. My mom always told me that I should consider being a sports reporter because I was the type just to want to talk about sports. Be around sports. I just love sports. She wanted to be a sports reporter but took a different route, so I guess I just kind of fulfilled her dreams but again they are mine as well.

7. Staying healthy and in shape year-round is important for any athlete. What does your typical off-season workout look like?

My typical off-season workout is rigorous. We lift twice a week, but I and a few others lift four times a week. We run, run and run... practice for three hours, and still do extra workouts on our own, footwork drills, anything to get us better. It's pretty tough.

8. What are your favorite healthy snacks and dorm room meals to eat?

Kashi Honey Almond granola bars. They are soooo good!

9. What are some of your after-practice or match-day beauty must-haves?

I need to have a towel to shower and a change of clothes. I'll feel so gross having to stay in sweaty clothes.

10. What advice would you give to any student-athletes who are trying to pursue a career outside of their sport?

Start pursuing your career early. I started my freshman year getting experience. The earlier you start, the higher chance you'll have of getting a job in your eld once you graduate. Also, MAKE CONNECTIONS. Don't be afraid to talk and get to know people because you never know who you might meet.

11. What does “PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT” mean to you?

PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT means beautiful women on their hustle. You can be the cutest girl in the world, but that can only get you so far. It just means that girls are on their grind just to be successful.
