Meet Jacqueline Ebanks: Executive Director of New York City’s Commission on Gender Equity

Jacqueline Ebanks was appointed as Executive Director of New York City’s Commission on Gender Equity in August of 2017. The Commission, which was established in 2015 by Mayor Bill de Blasio, seeks to promote initiatives that will reduce gender-based inequity and make New York City a more inclusive space for women, girls, transgender and gender non-conforming citizens. In this role, Ebanks will oversee these initiatives.

Ebanks has a career enduring over 30 years, tackling various issues including “economic, gender and racial equity as well as racial justice.” Before joining the de Blasio administration, she served as the Executive Director of the Women’s City Club of New York.

“I was there [from] 2014 to 2017 at the moment in which we found ourselves, which was that women really needed– again, there needed to be a rebirth, a renaissance of civic engagement and that women needed to be an integral part of that rebirth.”

In her new position as Executive Director of the Commission on Gender Equity, Ebanks hopes to ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of gender or sexual identity, have “a place in this city.”
